Medical tourism and travel for abortion services

Medical tourism is a global phenomenon that is worth billions of dollars. It is said to be a feature characteristic of globalization. Travel for abortion services (sometimes called “abortion tourism”) is considered a subset of medical tourism. However, it is usually ignored in the literature on medical tourism and overshadowed by examinations of women’s travel to access fertility services. This presentation focuses on women’s transnational abortion travel in the past and in the present, providing an opportunity to examine gendered meanings of mobility and stigmatized medical procedures like abortion.
Dr. Christabelle Sethna is Full Professor in the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies, UOttawa. Her research interests include the Cold War, second wave feminist sexual and reproductive politics, and transnational animal and human postcolonial histories. Her most recent book is Abortion Across Borders: Transnational Travel and Access to Abortion Services (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019) co-edited with Gayle Davis (UEdinburgh). She is currently PI for a research study on transnational travel for abortion services from the 1960s-1990s, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
