From Civil Society to (Everyday) Activism: Concepts and methods

One-day workshop for PhD candidates and advanced MA students.

In this workshop we will explore the ways in which we define, imagine and research civil society, activism, social engagement, resistance, work for social change and other related phenomena. The workshop will include presentations by the workshop leader on his research of civil society and activism in the Balkans, in Poland and in the UK; screening of a pre-release version of his and Dr Jan Lorenz’s recent film ‘Active (citizen)’; discussions around participants projects; explorations of different traditional and emerging research methods and their suitability for researching activism; and practical exercises.
Participants are requested to fill in the pre-workshop questionnaire which is available here: https://piotrgoldstein.typeform.com/to/cTYlsz and bring with them notebooks, pens, and some kind of not-very-big cameras (mobile phone camera is completely enough, or a compact/dSLR if you prefer).

*W przypadku braku uczestników niepolskojęzycznych głównym językiem warsztatów będzie język polski. Znajomość angielskiego będzie jednak przydatna ze względu na film z napisami po angielsku oraz część materiałów źródłowych.

Piotr Goldstein is a social scientist whose research is focused on questions of activism and civil society, post-conflict societies, the everyday, inter-ethnic dynamics, identity and gender. His PhD thesis was a study of broadly understood civil society in Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Novi Sad (Serbia). Most recently he held British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Manchester, during which he researched donor-independent civil society and various forms of ‘everyday activism’ in Novi Sad, Łódź, Debrecen (Hungary), Manchester (UK) and Cádiz (Spain). Before that, he lectured at the University of Manchester, held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Novi Sad and worked as a consultant in teaching methods for a university in Mexico. He is married to Izabella Goldstein and is a happy father of Perla and Miron. Currently he is based at the University of Manchester where he is working on completing a series of films about ‘invisible activism’ of migrants and ethnic minorities.

Projekt jest realizowany przez Stowarzyszenie Pracownia Etnograficzna im. Witolda Dynowskiego we współpracy z Instytutem Etnologii i Antropologii Kulturowej UW.

SEMINARIA NAUKOWE IEiAK - w trakcie seminariów badania prezentują pracownicy instytutu, a także antropolodzy i przedstawiciele pokrewnych dyscyplin z kraju i ze świata.
