We are pleased to present you with the catalogue from the “Cargo/(im)materiality” interdisciplinary exhibition (2015) which was co-hosted by our Institute together with the Asia Pacific Museum in Warsaw and Gallery 18A.
The volume co-edited by Piotr Cichocki and Weronika Plińska was prepared in collaboration with the students of ethnology and cultural studies. The exhibition was co-organized by the Faculty of Art, Pedagogical University of Cracow. Among the contributors to the project are contemporary artists: Daniel Rycharski, Dang Thuy Duong, Izabela Chamczyk, Piotr Cichocki, Marek M. Berezowski and Anton Nikolotov.
The liminal space between cultural anthropology and modern art is relatively unpopulated, so our exploration and eventual inhabitation of that area, which happened during the work on the exhibition entitled “CARGO/(im)materiality” demands a more elaborate reflection. Calling it a manifesto would perhaps be too pompous of a statement. It is more of a detailed description of our methodology, aims and theoretical basis. (…) The theoretical point of departure was a metaphor of CARGO, the notion present in the field of anthropology since the early descriptions of syncretic religious practices from Melanesia, widely known as the „cargo cults”. The concept of CARGO became used also outside the academic world, although originally it designated practices such as the mimicry of Western banking systems, airfields or clothing. We decided to make a reference to the term CARGO as to the discursive and performative reinterpretation of the role and meaning of the Western commodities.
